Rakaia Gorge Walkway

10.4km walk along the top of the Rakaia Gorge - around 3-4 hours return. The track goes through forest, then shrub, up to the ferryman’s track.

"Only a passionate fly fisher could have designed this place. An exquisite combination of aesthetic grandeur and the practical elements of streamside cover, transparent water and a healthy population of feisty lunkers with enough savvy to spurn a poor presentation. Nothing we had seen on this trip or any of our previous forays around the world could compare. Climbing through the fence at the Home Pool, we  spotted a Rainbow Trout which Woodsy estimated at somewhere between 12 and 14 lbs. It was undoubtedly the biggest wild fish I have ever seen. Unfortunately, its lie was so cunningly selected that any approach without the cover of darkness would have put the fish down. Just seeing it was enough..."
